The PROCESS
THE ETHICAL, SUSTAINABLE PROCESS
It all begins organically, working closely with a 3rd generation traditional batik printing business in Bali. I’m the student in ore of the possibility’s the skills and the process.
The garment process begins with the fabrics - coming together designing my prints and choosing the colours over Balinese sweet treats and black coffees.
I arrive infused with ideas, after discussing ideas we then make and create these ideas together. Nearly every time the outcome is a surprise and sometimes completely different to my original idea but always beautiful and perfect.
In Indonesia the blocks for printing are hand made from Copper.
The wax used for printing is reused and recycled.
Minimal water used in the dying and washing process.
I love the imperfections from this traditional style of printing. Embracing the human connection and hand made uniqueness of each meter of fabric knowing that no two garments will ever be the same. Creating a truly unique product.
REDUCING WASTE
Our textiles are measured and produced specifically for each order reducing any excess. The minimal excess of fabric is re-used creatively in lining details, pockets, bindings and on packaging for your orders.
As we scale and this changes there are various non profit organisations we will partner with that would re-use our fabrics.
THE DESIGN
We then design and make the patterns. Making samples for our new collection inspired by the fabrics the environment and my south African heritage.
SUPPORTING SMALL FAMILY BUSINESS
We work with and have became a part of a small family run production business who understood and was happy to work closely with me creating small runs per style for each collection, supporting each other to grow and scale organically.
The quality of the production and attention to detail is a priority to our business owner a passion of his to share his generational tailoring experience. This is appreciated and shows in our Nortje garments.
*We package our collections without any use of plastic.
